Underground Railroad History

Designations by the National Park Service Network to Freedom

 

Here in Oldham County, we are well-known for our Underground Railroad programs! Our Underground Railroad History is recognized by two designations by the National Park Service Network to Freedom – one being the ONLY Archives designation in Kentucky!

 

Oldham County KY black trailblazers were important to Underground Railroad history. Through our history programs we celebrate and recognize abolitionist and enslaved Henry Bibb, Union Soldier Alex Beaumont, and enslaved mother Eliza Brooks. Learn about these black trailblazers, as well as Oldham County’s Delia Webster, the first woman in Kentucky to be imprisoned for being a Conductor on the Underground Railroad.

 

Oldham’s Lunch & Learn on the Underground Railroad

 

A Perk only available through the Oldham County Tourism office in collaboration with our History Center, we incorporate a homemade Kentucky Comfort Foods buffet while we learn from the author of “A Tour on the Underground Railroad on the Ohio River,” Dr. Nancy Theiss, then tour a slaveowner’s parlor. *Available for Lunch or Dinner

The Oldham County Tourism office is excited to present two cemeteries available for private group tours through a collaboration of the Tourism Office and the Oldham County History Center!

 

Historic Pewee Valley Cemetery Tour

A fascinating private cemetery with Little Colonel history, southern antebellum history, and Underground Railroad history – all in Kentucky’s only recognized true Confederate Cemetery

 

Historic African American Cemetery Tour

 

A pre-Civil War thru current time cemetery tour by candlelight to learn about Oldham County’s Underground Railroad history through the actual lives of its people. *This is the perfect addition to an afternoon tour with our Kentucky Comfort Foods buffet dinner, and speaker.

The perfect interactive TOUR of the cocktail scene of the mid 19th Century and the mixology that went with it, held inside our historic Gatewood Pharmacy. *Includes period cocktail sampling!

A history strip tease! Our fashion historians take you through the layers of clothing, piece by piece, that women and men were wearing in early Oldham County when the railroad came through. Choose male or female.

The Oldham County town of La Grange was featured in the HGTV series, “Home Town Kick Start” that premiered April 24th, 2022. We always include time on Main Street in La Grange where you’ll find shopping & dining as part of our most Oldham County Group Tour Itineraries!

 

NOTE:  As with all small towns, a tour group beyond the normal local crowd can catch small restaurants and shops off guard, and we don’t want that to happen to you! Be sure to chat with Kim Hydes, Executive Director of Oldham County Tourism (below), for help booking your visits to La Grange to ensure that your time with us is FABULOUS!  Keep in mind that many mom-and-pop shops and restaurants in Kentucky are closed on Sundays and Mondays.
